About Us
We are a group of scholars from Indiana University, the University of Illinois, and other universities interested in exploring the ways that globalization affects the lives of ordinary people in the developing world.
The conventional story of human rights and global change is written by or about bankers, lawyers, or bureaucrats. It looks only at broad trends, like capital flows in and out of developing economies, the role of the IMF and the World Bank in promoting market reforms, or the promotion of Western-style democracy. This story is important, but leaves out the impact of globalization on the day-to-day lives of real people. We study the social, cultural, and economic changes that globalization causes in the day-to-day of people living and working in globalizing communities.
